Plagiarism can be defined as unauthorized use of other people’s language or thoughts and representing them as your own. For students, it may be easy to find information about research papers but it 's hard to put that information to your paper without having some elements of plagiarism. There are some easy steps to follow while writing your paper to ensure your document is free of plagiarism.

  1. CITE. This is the most efficient way to avoid plagiarism. Follow the simple writing style (APA, MLA, Chicago etc.) used in writing the research paper. This usually recommends adding of information like author’s, date of publications and others which helps avoid plagiarism.
  2. QUOTING. When citing a source, transfer the exact quote as it appears originally in the text. Do not quote large portions of text as that would be considered as plagiarized text otherwise you can paraphrase most if the text and still retain the meaning.
  3. REFERENCING. Adding a reference page at the end of your research paper is also an effective way of avoiding plagiarism. This page must also meet the document writing styles of the institution. The information to be included is very specific, the author(s), title, date of publications and source.
  4. PARAPHRASE. After gathering useful information about your paper, read it carefully and put it down in your own words. Make sure that your work is not an exact copy of the source but represent the same idea as the source.
  5. SEL-CITING. In case some of the material required in your paper you did use before in another paper, you can cite yourself. This is called self-citing. It may seem strange but using material you already used is called self-plagiarism, and it is not recommended.

Edit your work before handing it out. You may use plagiarism checker software to remove any traces of unrecognized plagiarism.
